Abstract
A review of recent developments in Knowledge-Based Expert Systems (KBES) for Finite Element Analysis is presented. Issues such as Modelling & Pre-Processing, Analysis, Post- Processing, Error Estimates and Adaptive Meshing, Software, Architecture, Implementation, and some specific applications are discussed. Future research needs are highlighted. One significant conclusion reached is that the development of a Global FE expert aid is beyond the scope of the present technology and that future work be aimed at identification of newer behaviour- and application-specific domains.
