Abstract
In the paper the prototype of the knowledge-based expert system ESAS for the evaluation of the seismic resistance of RC buildings is described. The system runs on IBM PC's and compatible personal computer under a MS-Windows environment. Hybrid knowledge representation is used. The system performs three different groups of tasks: (1) Evaluation of the conceptual design, (2) Control of the results of analysis and, (3) Assessment of seismic safety. Two different levels of sophistication are available to the user. At the first level compliance with EUROCODE 8 is checked, whereas at the second level different sources of knowledge published in the literature and provided in different codes are included. One of the outstanding characteristics of the system is the use of neural network-like non-parametric regression for the determination of the seismic capacities of structural elements. A hypothetical 12-storey RC building is used as a text example, illustrating some characteristics of the system.
