Abstract
A major problem of the dynamic analysis of a wind turbine, is the formulation of a mathematical model which adequately describes the gross angular motion of the rotor with respect to the tower support structure. The method discussed in this paper is based upon the derivation of the equations of motion of a modal representation of the wind turbine, and involves a great deal of complicated algebraic manipulation. Automation of the procedure by means of symbolic computing is described with particular reference to a simple three degree of freedom model. Finally, some results of the stability and forced dynamic response analysis of larger systems are presented.
