Abstract
This paper presents a numerical method of analysis for shear-type reinforced concrete buildings subjected to severe earthquakes. First, the assumptions used for modelling buildings as shear-type are given. The dynamic equations of motion for multidegrees of freedom systems for both elastic and inelastic behaviour are then presented. The properties of reinforced concrete rectangular sections and elements (used in the analysis) are given at different stages of loading. Choosing the actually recorded time history acceleration record of El-Centro earthquake of 1940, the dynamic equations of motion are solved numerically using the Wilson-theta method.

The above procedure of analysis is implemented into a computer program called NONSAB (Nonlinear Seismic Analysis of Buildings) to be used on the ICL 2956 computer system of Cairo University. Using this computer program a parametric study was made to investigate the effect of different parameters on the behaviour of such structures. Hence, many useful conclusions for the practicing engineer have been drawn and presented.
