Abstract
This paper describes the use of nonlinear mathematical programming techniques for structural optimization. After a preliminary study of three of these techniques the Sequential Linear Programming Method is developed for structural design. The application of the method to portal frame design is discussed and illustrated. The paper concludes with some comments on the development of computer software for structural optimization.
