Abstract
The paper traces the use of Computers in Civil and Structural Engineering in the West Indies with particular reference to computer aided instruction of civil and structural engineering students at the University of the West Indies and presents an overview of the current usage of Computers by practising engineers in the design office and on construction sites in the West Indies. The availability of computer software packages for civil and structural engineering applications is discussed and some of the problems in choosing and using such packages are identified and recommendations made for overcoming them. The paper concludes that there is an urgent need for a higher level of computer literacy amongst practising engineers throughout the West Indies in order to narrow the gap between theory and practice and it is recommended that this could be accomplished by means of regular intensive continuing education short courses.
