Abstract
In the paper a numerical method for the dynamic seismic analysis of single-block and multi-block monumental columns is presented. A multi-block column is constructed by discrete massive stone blocks placed one upon the other without the use of connecting mortar. At the interfaces between the blocks unilateral contact conditions with friction hold. For the numerical solution a general methodology and a computer program was developed. In this methodology. spatial finite element discretisation and temporal discretisation are used and a Linear Complementarity Problem is solved at each time step. Some interesting results and conclusions obtained from the numerical dynamic analyses of the seismic response of single and multi-block columns are presented.
