Abstract
This paper presents experimental work undertaken at the Centre for Cement & Concrete of the University of Sheffield on the short term behaviour of Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams strengthened either by epoxy bonded Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) or steel plates. It is shown that external bonding of CFRP plates can be used as an alternative to steel plates to achieve satisfactory repair or strengthening of existing RC beams, especially in enhancing their serviceability limit states. An innovative anchorage technique requiring no end fixings was developed during this research work. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique in avoiding or delaying peeling off of the external plate from the strengthened RC beam.
