Abstract
Manual design of a civil engineering component is often a guess-and-modify procedure, leading to a single solution which is unlikely to be an optimal result.

Optimisation techniques are unsuitable for all but the simplest of designs, because of the many, often nonlinear, parameters and also because unit costs cannot be prescribed reliably prior to the design.

A reanalysis procedure is proposed which iterates, from an initial unsuccessful design, towards a number of successful designs from which the engineer may make a sensible choice.
