In this paper, an attempt is made to formulate the optimum design of earthquake-resistant structures using the concept of fuzzy mathematical programming. By using the fuzzy mathematical programming, it is possible to deal with each design requirement as an objective function. In addition, it enables us to consider various types of uncertainties or ambiguities in a unified manner.

While the fuzzy mathematical programming can be extensively applied in any decision problem, it is necessary to consider carefully the aggregation of contradictory components for practical purposes. To find an adequate way of aggregating objective functions, we conducted a survey, during which several sets of questionnaires were distributed among experienced engineers to find their preference in the design of earthquake-resistant structures.

Results of these questionnaires are collected and analyzed by using the pairwise method. By using several numerical examples, the present method is illustrated and compared with the previous results using the minimum operator.
