Abstract
Tribological aspects of interaction of wheels and rails have a major impact on traffic safety, energy consumed on traction, dynamic characteristics of a train, maintenance, repair costs, and more. In this work, the tribological aspects of interaction of wheels and rails are considered taking into account properties and degree of destruction of the third body. The causes of negative, neutral and positive friction, as well as mild, severe and catastrophic wear, and methods of friction management are identified. In addition, the paper evaluates impact of the wheel wear on the friction path, sliding velocity and the frequency of zigzag motion.
