Abstract
This paper presents a short term simulation model designed for assessing alternative policies of operation for the Paranapanema River system in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This system has hydropower and flood control as the main purposes. The flood control is taken into account through maximum levels to be kept in each reservoir during rainy seasons. The short term model has one week as time horizon and the hourly time period as discretization interval. The main concerns are put on hydraulic, hydrologic and operational issues which are included in the simulation model. The results of proposed simulation model were compared with the historic operational data for a typical week. A good agreement was obtained, what can assure adequate capability for simulating the short term operation of this system. The methodology can be applied to another system with reservoirs in series.
