Abstract
This paper addresses itself to the expert system building technology by employing fuzzy reasoning and artificial neural network. An expert system building environment developed recently by authors named Fuzzy Neural Network Knowledge System f-NNKS is presented herein and its potential for engineering applications is discussed as well. The fuzziness, ranking itself amongst various kinds of uncertainties, of human knowledge is widely recognised in recent years for developing powerful expert systems with engineering applications. Though some methods have been proposed, the ability of present-day knowledge systems for handling such kind of uncertainty is still very weak. To make use of the artificial neural network for fuzzy reasoning is a hopeful, and new way. In order to utilize the neural network effectively, a fuzzy reasoning framework is formulated. The architecture of f-NNKS is described. The preliminary result of applying f-NNKS to earthquake induced damage forecasting is outlined as well.
