Abstract
This paper describes a KBS for the design of hybrid connections in structural steelwork. The system is based on an on-going research programme aimed at providing design guidance for those connections. The system is developed using the expert system shell, GOLDWORKS 11. The approach is a combination of object-oriented programming and rule-based programming. The main components of the system are described. The paper shows the suitability of such an approach in developing a KBS for an engineering design problem. It also discusses some benefits of developing a KBS alongside a research programme where the domain knowledge is not well established.
