Abstract
This paper presents a structural optimization programming system for the design of structural elements and skeletal structures. The indirect command file and overlay features available in a minicomputer provide the necessary framework for integrating user-supplied program modules with the basic program modules of the system to form an integrated program that meets the user's need. The structural optimization procedure is based on the sequential linear programming (SLP) method and the simplex algorithm is used to arrive at the optimum of the linearized problem. Optimality criteria based program modules are also available for the design of reinforced concrete flexural elements. The capabilities of the system and its implementation on a minicomputer are described. An application section demonstrates some of the possibilities for using the system as a teaching and a design aid.
