Abstract
Recent research by the authors has confirmed the need for knowledge based systems to assist construction estimators working within contractors' organisations to produce detailed cost estimates for construction projects. To enable such systems to be produced, it is essential to understand the estimator's decision making processes. This paper describes the use of Protocol Analysis to review estimator's decision making when undertaking the tasks within the estimating and tendering process. Particular reference is made to the task of performing the initial project study at the start of the tender period. Experimental results are described in detail and the advantages and disadvantages of Protocol Analysis identified. The possible use of Protocol Analysis for analysing the decision making processes of other engineering staff within the civil and structural engineering professions is discussed.
