Abstract
This paper demonstrates the advantages that could be gained by the use of formex algebra in relation to the design and development of major oil drilling/production platforms. As an illustration, a retrospective study of the Murchison Field platform has been carried out which concentrates on the algebraic formulation of the platform structure.

Numerical data enables the structure and each process configuration to be separately and precisely described relative to a common reference system. The configurations may be easily modified to deal with design alterations and interference problems. Further, the numerical data may be used in the design and analysis of the structure and of the different top side facilities.
