Abstract
The paper briefly describes the development of the GIPSYS CAD system by SWK over the last 20 or so years and describes the current use in a multi-disciplinary consultancy practice and on an agency basis. It discusses some aspects of the effect of CAD on the management of the drawing office and the project, as well as on the staff. Data is included on the cost implications of CAD. Finally the paper briefly looks into the future and gives the Author's opinion on the possible effect of future development of advanced CAD systems on the drawing office. It highlights the importance of compatibility of programmes to the industry. The intention of the paper is not to define the only way an organisation should implement CAD techniques, but to highlight some of the author's experiences and to generate thought and discussion by potential users.
