Abstract
Database management systems (DBMSs) have revolutionized business management by radically improving accessibility and timeliness of data. As with many technical and management advances, the construction industry lags behind in implementation of DBMSs. In light of this, three objectives were established for this paper. First, the importance of information management is reviewed. Next, construction applications of relational DBMSs are introduced. This is done in the context of the micro-computer environment and is oriented toward practitioners. Finally, effective data handling using a DBMS is demonstrated. This is accomplished via the example of a system created for the management of construction materials data.
