Abstract
Up until very recently it was considered impractical to create a database which held the complete definition and life history of an assembly as large as a powerstation. Computing technology has moved on and this paper discusses developments within the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) to do just this.

This paper is split into three main parts. First a discussion of the business environment in the CEGB and the reasons for building such a system. Secondly a review of the current facilities within the IBM based CAESAR project. Thirdly the short and long term development plans both within, and perhaps outside, the Board.
