Abstract
Automated fabrication process of steel plate girders using robotics welding requires modified structural details such as stiffener-end gaps. To investigate the effects of these gaps on the behaviour of girders, a parametric study using finite element analyses has been designed based on laboratory experiments. The finite element model is verified by experimental data and the nonlinear solution technique is optimised. The behaviour of this type of girders is classified based on the nonlinear load-deflection curves of girders and the observed interaction of local and global phenomena. In this paper the details of the developed finite element model and some of the results are presented.
