Abstract
The use of a computer spreadsheet can be extended beyond usual calculation processing to create an excellent platform for a decision support system. This paper discusses the development of an Excel spreadsheet application (GWX-Control) for assisting in the selection of a groundwater control regime for a construction excavation. Sub water table excavation will allow groundwater to enter the hole - sometimes rapidly. Choosing an appropriate groundwater control method is therefore a key part of the initial construction phase on a site. Input of site information is by parameter and is matched to fact-segments of data (derived from a standard text) about each parameter for each method. Weighted ranked parameter suitability numbers are output for each method together with comments and a final ranked recommended method list.
