Abstract
After a slow start one area in engineering which has been quite prolific in the application of engineering computational technology has been in the area of construction engineering and management.

The research described in this paper was primarily concerned with the development of a prototype knowledge-based computer expert system which can be used for the selection of appropriate earthmoving equipment and the estimation of its production and costs for certain earthmoving operations. The knowledge built into the system and the application of the system is described.
