Abstract
The following paper deals with the perception and preference of engineering constructions by non-professionals and professionals. 14 alternative designs of a freeway overpass were modelled three-dimensionally with CADSoftware. 170 people, half of them professional members, half non-professionals, of the four groups of engineers, architects, 'non-graduates' and environmentalists were interviewed. Some of the results are presented in short. In spite of a certain accordance concerning the 14 alternatives, opposite tendencies between the four groups could be noticed. A model of preference with the two factors "prototypicality" and "impression" was tested and has led to exciting results in this range of application.
