Abstract
The paper reports on a theoretical and an experimental investigation into the buckling of three circumferentially corrugated circular cylinders under uniform external pressure. One of the vessels appeared to buckle elastically through general instability, but the other two vessels appeared to buckle inelastically. To cater for the latter two cases of failure, a semi-empirical method is described which may eventually enable a plastic reduction factor to be determined for these vessels, so that their inelastic buckling pressures can be determined.
