Abstract
This paper aims to describe the design process used by engineers and architect when designing innovative structures. The design proceeds progressively through a number of stages from conception to construction and within each stage there is a control process by which the design is reviewed. This has been termed a merit function, it looks forward to the completion of the project and backward to the requirements. The paper describes this process and is illustrated by several examples.
