Abstract
The paper reviews innovations in building design both past and
present.
It describes what was done, why it was done and what the consequences of change were.
It concludes that mere extrapolation from the conventional is not a safe way of proceeding but that an understanding of basic scientific principles is a sine qua non of such work.
