Abstract
The performance of high strength concrete columns under a perfectly axial load is analysed. The main characteristic of these columns is their high compressive strength, which produces substantial savings resulting from the reduction of the column cross section. The formulas provided in the Norwegian Standard NS 3473, British Standard BS 81 10, American Code ACI 3 18 and CEB-FIP Model Code 1990 are presented. The results derived from these codes are compared with experimental values obtained by several researchers. It can be concluded, for instance, that the design based on a consideration of the core bounded by reinforcing bars leads to better results compared with those values which consider the total cross section of the column.
