Abstract
This paper describes the design research and manufacturing work of a SME company to satisfy customer needs for processing hot aggressive liquids in the metallurgical industry. The optimal forms are large diameter vertical process vessels and cost effective material alternatives are glass fiber reinforced plastic and metal. The goal of the producer is to maximise the customer satisfaction within the technical and economic constraints. First global solutions are innovated and analysed and then the optimal choice is designed in detail. Realisable detail design innovations are obtained using first creative heuristics and experience. Then these are optimised with fuzzy satisfaction goals with discrete design variables. Final designs are optimised with FEM and checked with experimental testing.
