Abstract
The paper proposes coupling a genetic algorithm with a neural network to create a computer-automated procedure for conceptual design that uses directed random search guided by artificial learning to generate best-concept design solutions. The first part of the paper illustrates the basic features of the computational model through reference to the conceptual design of a building structural system. The latter part of the paper discusses a number of information processing issues central to the effective operation of the proposed model.
