Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the use of Information Technology (IT) in civil and structural engineering design in the twentieth century through to 1996. IT is first defined in general terms, and the intent and scope of the study is outlined through reference to the literature sources used. A brief history of IT starting in the last century is then sketched to provide the background context for the study. Thereafter, the history of the use of IT in civil and structural engineering design is traced from early in the century to the present day. The paper concludes with some remarks about the impact to date of IT on civil and structural engineering design.
