Abstract
A nationwide project was funded by British Steel Corporation in 1983-84 to improve the teaching of structural steelwork design in degree courses. This paper describes that part of the project concerned with development of software for computer-assisted learning. The project structure, major policy decisions and objectives are described. Techniques for communication with the student were the subject of considerable discussion during the development, and the resulting principles which have been adopted are explained. Examples are given of the types of interaction attempted. It is still early to attempt to evaluate the success of individual programs or techniques, but an evaluative machinery has been set up and will produce valuable feedback in the next few years.
