Abstract
It has been observed in several meetings on object oriented programming (OOP) that one of the main criticisms against OOP is that it inherently lacks efficiency. It is generally believed that any program, written in an OOP language, will inherently be less efficient than its counter-part, written in FORTRAN.

In this work it is shown that the indiscriminated use o certain constructs in OOP really leads to a (significant) reduction in efficiency. It is also shown that, on the other hand, if an object oriented program is written for maximum efficiency, its performance is equal or comparable to its equivalent FORTRAN implementation.
