Average ambient temperatures are rising and both undesirable CO2 and CO2e emissions are increasing together with an increase in methane’s ambient concentration. Very large investments have started in the UK to mitigate climate change using energy conservation, decarbonisation plus other necessary measures. Transport energy consumption in the UK is high and unit undesirable emissions for various transport methods are presented. Transport using standard freight containers (one or two TEU) are given. Examples are included where local partial pre-treatment of raw materials before shipment are performed to minimise the container loads/numbers required. Employing partially prepared raw materials saves transport energy. The use of containers for mobile hospitals is presented as is more conventional hospital carriages/trains which are of older designs. Comparison of land usage by road and rail transport is given in outline. A brief description of certain significantly more modern, but unconventional window glasses to improve hygiene and welfare for the occupants of the older hospital trains is presented (missile resistant and privacy glass) permitting relatively simple welfare upgrades. Though terrestrial units dominate the descriptions of transports some freight aircraft metrics are included with a brief tabulation of the historical development of aircraft engines.
