Abstract
The paper describes the history and the architecture of trailing railway wheelsets. Improvements in the design are described as well, showing remaining unsolved criticalities. Scientific literature on the subject is analyzed, highlighting the wide importance that axles still hold. Some relevant accidents resulting from of wheelset failures are described. A novel design of a wheelset studied to improve safety, reduce maintenance, and reduce LCC, is introduced.
