Abstract
In this chapter, the history of substructuring and domain decomposition are presented and the general concepts and principles of these techniques are discussed. The key issues in domain decomposition and substructuring are first outlined for the computational mechanics community, and then recent work are reviewed. Both mathematical properties, heterogenous problems, multi-physics and multi-models, multi-point constraints, non-linearities and contacts are investigated during this discussion. The contribution of each of the remaining chapters in this book are then summarized and discussed.
