Summary
The use of aggregates with high abrasion resistance is key to guarantee a good track performance over time; however to obtain high-quality aggregates is not always feasible at reasonable cost. Because of this, the creation of new alternatives with lower life cycle costs and lower environmental impact, such as SFS-Rail, is fundamental for the economical and environmental sustainability of the railway infrastructure. SFS-Rail are recycled aggregates from electric arc furnace slags for use in subgrade and subballast layers and that offer excellent physical and mechanical properties. In this paper, a first review of the use of ferrous slag in civil applications is carried out. Next, the SFS-Rail aggregates are described as well as their main benefits in terms of track performance. Furthermore, an analysis of the results from laboratory tests undertaken on SFS-Rail are undertaken in order to prove that they comply with the existing European norms regulating the use of aggregates for track bed layers. Finally, the characteristics of the field tests, and its monitoring, that will take place next year are briefly explained.
