Summary
The paper presents, for the first time, computer designs of several buildings that can withstand the full force of tornadoes and hurricanes. Some of the designs were for houses, while others were for the design of schools and another for the design of a hospital; where all the buildings were designed to withstand pressures of about 1/20th of an atmosphere. All the buildings were designed in the form of pressure vessels; and usually in the form of corrugated domes, made in aluminum alloy or steel. In the case of the houses, the paper shows that the external pressure that the six houses needed to withstand was about 9540Pa, which was created by 200mph (320km/h) winds. Houses 5 and 6, with corrugated cylindrical walls were able to cope with external pressures of over 70000Pa, before undergoing plastic deformation and suffering material and geometrical material non-linearity. The designs of the hospital and the school were similar. All the designs were carried out with the aid of the commercial computer package, namely ANSYS, together with in-house finite element software.
