Abstract
An algorithm is developed for the dynamic analysis of nonlinear structural systems using the normal mode superposition technique. An assumed linear stiffness is used throughout the response solution and the nonlinearities are grouped together with the external loads. The nonlinearity considered here is that due to gross deformations as encountered in structures comprising very flexible cables and pin-ended bars. The response is evaluated using only a small number of the lower mode shapes and frequencies but if required a correction to include the effects of higher modes based on static analysis may be requested. An iterative procedure under static effects is presented and numerical examples are included.
