Abstract
Current graphics packages incorporate some powerful features and tools which make them most suitable for design processing tasks involving substantial use of geometrical data. The advantages of utilising graphics packages capabilities for generic provision processing over other methods are highlighted. It is concluded that the 'generic method' based on automatic extraction of geometrical data provides a practical, interactive and effective means which can aid the structural engineer in sizing and conformance checking tasks especially for non-standard situations.
