Abstract
This paper is designed to provide an insight into the work behind the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) for Civil Engineering design using Case-Based Reasoning: (CBR) an artificial intelligence technique. To date research work in CBR has focused on demonstrating the feasibility of the technology. A significant amount of diagnostic applications have been developed and more recently work has been carried out on the development of design-based systems. The work described here is being conducted in collaboration with the Civil Engineering industry to allow developments to be evaluated and to assess the practicality of applying CBR to real design problems.
