With contributions from: H. Adeli, R.C. Barros, J.M.W. Brownjohn, M. Celebi, J. Chen, X. Chen, J.P. Colaco, R. Delgado, N.A.C. Ferreira, X. Jiang, A. Kareem, K.C.S. Kwok, M. Lew, F. Naeim, T. Nonaka, T-C. Pan, T.A. Rose, P.D. Smith, H. Takabatake, S. Thepmongkorn, G.S. Wood and Y.L. Xu

As the height of tall buildings increases beyond the available design guidance in existing codes, there is a need for codes to be updated to include research into advanced and new materials. The incorporation of expert advice from designers, construction professionals, user experiences and research conclusions continue to ensure confidence that codes incorporate the latest knowledge and innovations. A major structural requirement is the accurate determination of the loads acting on the tall building, how these loads are resisted and how the loads are transmitted effectively to the foundations.

In this book the design of tall buildings is considered from the point of view of architectural and structural interactions. Also included are: wind effects on tall buildings, the building's wind response; and analysis of three dimensional response of buildings with complex geometric shapes or structural systems. In addition, seismic hazards are considered and a review of failure and damage mechanisms in previous seismic events; seismic monitoring; wind-induced responses to neighbouring buildings; field measurements during high winds; vibration control; and blast load effects control. The book indicates areas where past lessons need to be fully appreciated.
