Summary
This paper deals with the geometry related issues nascent between tram wheel and rail during regular operation. Most related research is based solely on nominal geometry, but supplements of worn cases should be done. Exploitation of worn wheels may result in a decrease in contact force levels, which is verified in this paper. To learn about interaction between a tram wheel and the rail, geometric and simulation analysis were conducted for selected rim and rail profiles (new and worn state) used in Poland. On this basis: theoretical centre points of contact patches, wheel-rail clearance and geometrical conformity, contact forces levels, safety against derailment coefficient, wheel raise and ride index were specified. The influence of selected cases on chosen parameters was shown, e.g. misconfigured wheel-rail pairs and wheel-rail clearance shortage.
