Summary
The automatic train protection systems (ATPs) are great contributors to the safety of railways. Japanese railways rely heavily on ATPs, while the regulations on the crashworthiness of the bodies of the railway vehicles in Japan remain relatively loose. As in most other countries, the development of ATPs in Japan has been prompted by a number of serious accidents. In this paper, the authors describe in detail the timeline of events related to ATPs in Japanese railways including these accidents. The authors also show the statistical analysis of safety so that the impact of the difference in ATP system functionality can be seen.
