Summary
This paper shows the effect of piezoelectric microstructure configuration on the performance figures of piezoelectric composite materials in plane strain. The asymptotic homogenization equations are solved numerically using the finite element method to extract the piezoelectric material moduli. The electromechanical coupling factors of the piezoelectric composite are obtained for different volume ratios of the fibre material and various microstructural designs. No improvement in the electromechanical coupling factor is observed except in the thickness mode. The modal electromechanical coupling factor has shown similar characteristics to the material one under varying fibre volume fractions.
