Abstract
Some knowledge in design codes can not be directly applied in CAD system. They must be described in formal language, and then used in CAD system for engineering design. In this paper some approaches to the formal processing of codes for reinforced concrete structural design a restudied. For the purpose of applying design knowledge expressed in natural language and/or diagram form to CAD system, the concept of formalization description is proposed and used for knowledge processing. For design knowledge about calculation and inference sequence implied between provisions in design codes, a code-based problem-solving control structure is established to explicitly describe this part of knowledge. Using the methods presented in this paper, we have successfully applied design knowledge with different forms in design codes to the intelligent CAD system-ICAD, and provided the design type knowledge-based system with a new way to expand and refine its knowledge base.
