Summary
The damage suffered by architectural heritage during earthquakes have clearly shown that the seismic fragility of historic masonry buildings is mainly controlled by local collapse mechanisms. The purpose of the work, described in this paper, is to investigate the structural response arising from seismic actions of some masonry portions by using the distinct element model. More precisely, masonry is considered as an assembly of rigid irregular blocks connected by frictional non-cohesive interfaces that take into account the non-linear behaviour of the material. A procedure for performing push-over analysis and obtaining the capacity curve is implemented in the discrete element code, and the results are compared to the classical mechanism method. Eventually, the proposed method is applied to a portion of the Casamari Abbey in Veroli, Italy, a Cistercian complex dating back to the XIII century.
