Abstract
The paper deals with conceptual decisions taken during the preliminary design of structures. Aiming at the computer support of such decisions one comes up inevitably to the application of AI-techniques. The following issues are discussed: intelligent access to the previous design experience stored in the database, automatic generation and comparison of plausible alternatives, acquisition of new knowledge through algorithmic structural optimization. The difficult task of supporting innovative solutions plays the main role in the considerations. Several knowledge-based computer programs illustrate the implementation of the proposed ideas.
