Summary
The dynamic stability of trains moving over bridges subjected to earthquakes is studied in this paper. The study focuses on seismic events with small return periods with the high probability of occurrence. Since no plasticity occurs in the columns for these levels of seismicity, the analyses are performed in the elastic domain. However, the reduction in the columns stiffness as a result of cracking is accounted for and a method to compute their effective stiffness is proposed. The analyses are performed using a nonlinear train-bridge interaction method, being the running safety evaluated with the safety criteria from the literature.
