Summary
This paper gives an overview of spare parts planning and control for maintenance operations. To illustrate this, several projects in collaboration with NedTrain, a division of the Dutch railways responsible for rolling stock maintenance, are described. The findings show that postponing maintenance as long as technically possible is not the most economical decision in many cases. Furthermore, the smart use of flexible repair capacity for spare parts can significantly reduce the investment in spare parts needed to guarantee service of rolling stock.
